In Nashville, a powerful organization called 4:13 is redefining second chances for young men caught in the cycle of incarceration. Focused on men aged 18-30 in and out of jail, 4:13 offers these individuals a unique, transformative opportunity to reshape their futures. Through a structured campus-based program, participants receive more than just shelter—they’re immersed in a comprehensive life skills curriculum that includes vocational training, spiritual guidance, mental health support, and money management coaching. It’s a lifeline for those who’ve never been given a fair shot to create a better path.
To further strengthen these men’s resilience, a few local supporters conceived an event that challenges both body and mind: “The Struggle.” Now in its third iteration, Struggle 003 is set to take place on November 1st in Williamson County. Designed as a 10-12 hour GoRuck-style endurance and leadership event, The Struggle offers a crucible of physical and mental challenges that push participants beyond what they thought possible. Those who complete the night are awarded a hard-earned patch, a symbol of their endurance and commitment.
The event itself is grueling, involving up to 15 miles of ruck marching with 30-pound bags—often supplemented by even heavier loads like 60-pound sandbags or telephone poles. Several intense 30-to 60-minute workouts are scattered throughout the night to break comfort zones and build camaraderie. The event includes motivational sessions with two exceptional guest speakers and a surprise workout led by former Special Ops veterans, including Rangers, who impart lessons in grit and teamwork that resonate long after the night ends.
4:13 participants are joined by volunteers from F3, a national men’s fitness and leadership group, ensuring a 1:1 ratio between 4:13 men and F3 members. This partnership goes beyond physical support—it demonstrates brotherhood and solidarity. To the men of 4:13, having F3 participants by their side, enduring the same hardships, is a powerful testament of support that speaks to the value of accountability and shared strength.
The essence of The Struggle is about equipping these young men with skills that will serve them in life after they graduate from 4:13. When they face challenges—whether it’s the pressure to fall back into old habits or the uncertainty of new opportunities—they can draw on this experience to find the confidence to keep going. As one past participant demonstrated, the pride of completion is so profound that many wear their earned patches to job interviews, a visible reminder of their resilience.
The impact of The Struggle extends even beyond the participants. A guest speaker from the last event, whose life story included tragic choices and powerful lessons, was so moved by the experience that he’s asked to return—not as a speaker but as a participant. For the men of 4:13, The Struggle is a powerful rite of passage, affirming their worth and resilience. It’s not just a test of endurance; it’s a cornerstone of transformation, showing them that they have the strength to overcome no matter what they face.
