Nashville Fit Magazine Spotlight: The Evolution of FitTruk with Josh Guffey

The result can be genuinely transformative when passion, necessity, and innovation collide. That’s precisely what happened with Josh Guffey, the brain behind FitTruk, a mobile gym experience that’s not just convenient but downright game-changing. When I had the chance to sit down with Josh, I couldn’t hide my excitement—I love what he’s doing, and if I’d seen something like FitTruk years ago, I might have never stepped away from training.

Josh’s journey didn’t start with a grand plan to disrupt the fitness industry; it began with a simple desire: “Never own a brick-and-mortar gym. “I never wanted to own a gym,” Josh admits. During COVID, I had to open a studio to train clients because I had older clients and doctors who didn’t want to go to the gym. But I was always happy paying my rent in a day and walking away, not having to manage anything else.”

However, an idea had been simmering for 16 years—finally pushed to fruition by the global pandemic. The concept? A mobile gym that could deliver a complete workout experience anywhere, anytime. “People think I came up with FitTruk during COVID, but the truth is, COVID just pushed me to do it finally,” Josh explains. “I’ve been trying to figure out how to pull this off since my days at Lifetime Fitness 16 years ago.”

The idea was born out of necessity. A fire captain who frequented Lifetime Fitness regularly complained to Josh about how hard it was to get his fellow firefighters to work out. “I wish someone would just bring the gym to me,” the captain would say. That wish planted a seed in Josh’s mind. But it wasn’t just about tossing some dumbbells into the back of a truck—Josh wanted to create a full gym experience that could serve any population, whether elite athletes or complete beginners.

Fast-forward to the early days of COVID, and Josh finds himself with the time, space, and motivation to bring his idea to life. “I’m a car guy,” Josh says, grinning. I landed on using an ambulance because it already had the power, space, and compartments needed for equipment. It took years of planning, but finally, I had the time and the shop to make it happen.”

With the help of his business partner Haley, who shared a similar disdain for brick-and-mortar gyms after closing one down pre-pandemic, Josh purchased an ambulance from a local fire department and spent the next nine months transforming it into what would become the first FitTruk. “We tried to make it look as little like an ambulance as possible while designing it to be a functional gym on wheels,” Josh explains.

The reception was nothing short of incredible. What started as an extension of Haley’s City Gym quickly gained traction, with media coverage and word-of-mouth leading to inquiries from all over the country—and even the world. “We launched at IHRSA in 2022 with our prototype, and the response was crazy,” Josh recalls. “We had fitness models running workouts on the truck, and our booth was packed. But as soon as that prototype was done, I knew we could do better.”

Josh returned to the drawing board with no one to settle, refining the truck design and improving the manufacturing process. Today, FitTruk has evolved into a lean, mean fitness machine with a design that Josh is genuinely proud of. “It’s been a wild ride,” Josh reflects. “But in business, sometimes everything just comes together when it’s supposed to. And that’s exactly what happened with FitTruk.”

With manufacturing moving closer to home and a team that understands his vision, Josh is poised to take FitTruk to new heights. “We’re building a truck right now, just 25 minutes from my house,” he says, the excitement evident in his voice. “We’ve come a long way, but this is just the beginning.”

FitTruk isn’t just a mobile gym—it’s the future of fitness, designed to meet people where they are and bring the workout to them. And with Josh Guffey at the helm, this is one fitness revolution that’s just starting.
