How to Make Gluten-Free Pizza at Home (Basic Recipe)

What Is Gluten-Free Pizza?

Gluten-free pizza dough is made using flour, sauce, and toppings that do not contain gluten. Gluten is a group of proteins found in wheat and other grains like barley and rye. Some people find it hard to digest and even problematic for their health. 

Gluten-free pizza uses flour that does not contain these proteins when you form your dough. For this pizza crust, you must combine the flour with wet ingredients like oil and lots of water to prevent the dough from drying out. Despite a few extra steps, these recipes can still be easy to prepare and delicious.

How to Make Gluten-Free Pizza in 15 Easy Steps 

Making gluten-free pizza at home is easier than you think!

Preparation time: 15 minutes 

Cooking time: 20 minutes

Chilling time: 10 minutes

Total time: 45 minutes

Makes: 2 12-inch pizzas

Gather these ingredients for your dough, sauce and toppings:

  • 420 grams of gluten-free bread flour or all-purpose gluten-free flour
  • 1 tablespoon of salt 
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil. 
  • 4 ½  teaspoons of baking powder 
  • 8 ounces of lukewarm water if using gluten-free bread flour. 11 ounces of lukewarm water if using all-purpose gluten-free flour. 
  • 1 tablespoon of honey or another sweetening liquid of choice.
  • 8 fluid ounces of ready-made pizza sauce or tomato sauce
  • 1 pound of grated mozzarella or other cheese of choice
  • Gluten-free toppings of choice, like chicken (optional)

A stand mixer will make preparing the dough easier. It should have a bread or dough hook for bread flour or a paddle attachment for all-purpose flour. You also need a pizza stone or a metal baking sheet. 

Once you have all your ingredients, it’s time to make the most delicious, homemade gluten-free pizza! Follow these 15 easy steps:

  1. Add the flour, salt and baking powder to your mixing bowl. Give these dry ingredients a quick whisk to combine them well.
  2. Pour the water, olive oil and honey into the dry mixture and mix on a low speed until combined.
  3. Once combined, turn the mixer’s speed up to medium so the dough can knead for approximately 5 minutes. The dough will initially be sticky or clumpy before coming together, but it will be smooth and slightly stretchy once kneaded.
  4. Transfer the dough from your mixer to a lightly oiled bowl. The dough may be a little sticky coming out of the blender, but you can use a lightly oiled spatula to scrape any dough off the sides of the mixing bowl.
  5. Cover the bowl with an oiled sheet of plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 10 minutes. Chilling the dough slightly makes it easier to work with.
  6. Add a dusting of gluten-free flour to your surface, then transfer the chilled dough to the surface and dust it with a little more flour. 
  7. Divide the dough into roughly equal portions and roll them into two smooth balls. Cover one ball of dough with a clean, damp tea towel so it does not dry out while you work the other portion.
  8. Cover your hands and a roller pin a little bit of the gluten-free flour, and roll out the first ball of dough. 
  9. Work from the center of the dough to the edges, making the crust slightly thicker than the base so you create a well for the sauce and toppings. Place the pizza base on a sheet of baking paper.
  10. Repeat with the second ball of dough.
  11. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit if using bread flour or 350 degrees Fahrenheit for all-purpose flour.
  12. If using gluten-free bread flour, you can add your sauce, cheeses and toppings now. Transfer the pizzas to the pizza stone or the back of a metal baking sheet. Bake for approximately 10 minutes or until the cheese is nicely melted. 
  13. If using all-purpose flour, brush the whole pizza base and crust with olive oil. Place in the oven and bake for approximately 15 minutes so the dough can puff up and brown.
  14. Remove from the oven to cool. Add your toppings before transferring back to the oven to bake again until the cheese melts.  
  15. Allow the pizza to cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving. Enjoy!
