Honor Fallen Heroes at Nashville’s Biggest MURPH Challenge

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The annual Nashville MURPH Challenge is set to return this Memorial Day, hosted by For The Veteran and Legacy Men at a local Nashville park.

“Our goal this year is to label it as the biggest MURPH in Nashville,” says Stuart Scheidecker, owner of Legacy Men. The event has expanded significantly since its inception, and is expected to be bigger than ever.

What is a MURPH?

The MURPH workout honors Michael Murphy, a fallen soldier who was known for doing this particular routine. It consists of a one-mile run, followed by 300 air squats, 200 pushups, and 100 pull-ups, finished with another one-mile run—all while wearing a weighted vest.

“For really athletic people, it takes under 45 minutes,” explains Scheidecker. “Average would be about an hour, and then everyone else would probably be an hour to an hour and a half.”

The Event Experience

The challenge welcomes participants of all fitness levels, with modifications available for those who need them. “We do have people of all backgrounds come,” Scheidecker notes. “The pull-up bars, we have some that are lower, so you can just do back rows. People do a half mile, some people walk!”

Participants can choose from four different heat times: 7:45 AM, 8:30 AM, 9:30 AM, and 10:30 AM. Registration is free and available online or on the day of the event.

Sponsors and Support

The event has attracted numerous sponsors including Athletic Brewing, ABUNDNT Nutrition, Alani Nu, Black Rifle Coffee, and more. There will be electrolyte drinks, cold plunges for recovery, and other amenities to help participants cool down after their workout.

Community Building

Beyond the physical challenge, the event embodies Legacy Men’s mission of building community through shared experiences. “People build the best bonds shoulder to shoulder doing something hard,” says Scheidecker, whose company focuses on hosting challenging events that get men “out of the gym, out of the office, out of their norm.”

Spectators are welcome to attend and support participants throughout the day.
