From Broken To Natural Body Building

The inspiring story of Byron Lawson by: Terry Barga

As I sit down to write this article, I can’t help but feel a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to interview someone as inspiring as Byron. His story resonates deeply with anyone who has faced adversity and found the strength to rise above it.
Byron’s journey into fitness began at a young age, fueled by his fascination with superheroes and their extraordinary feats. From track and field in high school to studying karate in college, Byron’s passion for physical fitness grew stronger. His dedication led him to the Marine Corps, where he spent twenty-two years honing his skills as a combat athlete.
Byron’s body endured its fair share of injuries throughout his military career. Ankle surgeries, a partial knee replacement, and shoulder joint damage left him classified as a disabled veteran. But rather than succumbing to his physical limitations, Byron reevaluated his fitness approach.
He discovered that weight training provided a controlled, pain-free alternative to high-impact activities like CrossFit and martial arts. Byron embraced bodybuilding, focusing on proper form and nutrition to achieve his goals. Recognizing that nutrition played a crucial role, he sought the guidance of a nutrition coach and found that 70% of his success came from this aspect alone.
Last summer, Byron took the leap and competed in his first bodybuilding competition with the American Natural Bodybuilding Federation. Despite having no expectations, he emerged victorious, securing two first-place and two second-place finishes. The experience left him exhilarated and motivated to continue pursuing his newfound passion.

As a grandfather, Byron’s perspective on fitness and nutrition has evolved. He realizes that staying in shape and maintaining healthy habits is essential for being present in the lives of his children and grandchildren. This desire to experience life to the fullest has fueled his determination to prioritize his well-being.
Byron’s commitment to fitness has not gone unnoticed by his family. His wife and daughter have been inspired to join him in the gym, discussing proper nutrition and workout routines. Through his actions, he has become a role model for his loved ones, instilling in them the importance of caring for their bodies.

When asked about the advice he would give to his younger self, Byron emphasizes the significance of self-care and taking steps to preserve one’s health. He acknowledges that his younger self was solely focused on competitive sports, neglecting the necessary measures to ensure his long-term well-being. His message to others his age and older is to never use age as an excuse to abandon fitness. Though certain activities may become more challenging, there are always ways to stay active and pursue a healthier lifestyle.
Byron’s story reminds us that it is never too late to embark on a journey of self-improvement and make positive changes in our lives. It is a testament to the power of discipline, resilience, and the unwavering pursuit of one’s passions. Through his determination, Byron has transformed his life and inspired those around him to strive for their own greatness.

As I conclude this article, I am filled with admiration and gratitude for Byron’s openness in sharing his remarkable journey. His story is a powerful reminder that we can overcome obstacles and achieve our goals with dedication and perseverance. So let us all take a page from Byron’s book and embrace the transformative power of fitness, knowing that the benefits extend far beyond our physical well-being.
