NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Fleet Feet Nashville is bringing one of ultra running’s most iconic figures to town this fall. On Wednesday, September 10, Lazarus Lake—best known as the mastermind behind the Barkley Marathons—will join author Jared Beasley for a live conversation at Clementine Hall.
The event, presented in partnership with Parnassus Books and HOKA, will highlight Beasley’s new book The Endurance Artist, which explores the extreme world of ultra running and the athletes who take on seemingly impossible challenges.
Lake, whose real name is Gary Cantrell, has long been considered a legend in endurance sports. Nicknamed “the Leonardo da Vinci of Pain,” he is known for designing races that push participants to their physical and mental limits. The Barkley Marathons, held each year at Frozen Head State Park in East Tennessee, is regarded as one of the most grueling footraces in the world.
“This is a rare opportunity to hear directly from Lazarus Lake, whose events have become legend in the ultrarunning community,” said Teri Akovenko, Marketing Director at Fleet Feet Nashville. “We’re thrilled to partner with Parnassus Books and HOKA to bring this conversation to Nashville.”
The evening will feature a discussion between Lake and Beasley, moderated by UltraSignup co-owner Jay Kelley. Guests will also have the chance to purchase signed copies of The Endurance Artist through Parnassus Books.
