Fit Friday Feature: Tycho Bergquist’s Journey to Subconscious Optimization in Nashville

NASHVILLE, Tenn – Tycho Bergquist, a former semi-professional touring drummer, has transitioned from performing on stage to transforming lives through health and fitness. His unique approach combines physical training with subconscious optimization, helping clients achieve goals that go far beyond the gym.

Early Life and Musical Roots

Bergquist grew up on the East Coast, near Boston, and later lived in California and Austin. Music has been a central part of his life for decades. “I was drumming for about 30 years,” he said. “Fitness coaching became my passion after I realized the impact of health on my performance and overall well-being. Touring was fun, but the lifestyle was unsustainable—three hours of sleep a night, non-stop travel, and barely any time for myself.”

He credits his physical fitness for enhancing his musical abilities. “I realized my mind and body would connect, and I wanted to help others find that same synergy. Fitness transformed my life, and teaching it became my calling.”

Transitioning from Music to Fitness

Bergquist’s path to fitness coaching was unconventional. Unlike many trainers who come from a sports background, he wasn’t a traditional athlete in school. “I tried sports, but nothing really landed,” he explained. “Fitness became personal, it was about making my drumming better, feeling stronger, and gaining energy.”

After noticing the improvement in stamina and overall physical performance from his own workouts, Bergquist pursued certifications in professional fitness coaching. Over the past 14 years, he has developed his own structured modality that blends strength training, conditioning, and holistic wellness practices.

The Move to Nashville

Bergquist arrived in Nashville for music in 2023, attending Bonnaroo with his fiancé. While visiting, he noticed the city’s unexpected health-conscious culture, from organic food options to active yoga communities. “I realized that Nashville has the potential to go beyond ‘sick care’ and embrace true health optimization,” he said.

His goal is to introduce a comprehensive approach to wellness, integrating fitness, nutrition, and the mind-body connection. “I’m here to help people maximize their health potential through a method I call subconscious optimization,” he explained.

What is Subconscious Optimization?

Bergquist’s approach goes deeper than standard fitness programs by addressing the subconscious mind, which he says governs 95-97% of our daily actions. “Most fitness struggles happen because people are unconsciously sabotaging themselves based on patterns formed in early life,” he explained.

Through structured assessments and one-on-one sessions, Bergquist identifies these patterns and works with clients to realign their goals with their true intentions. For example, a client seeking a bigger glute may unconsciously be motivated by early-life experiences rather than personal health. Bergquist helps reframe these goals in a positive, purposeful way.

The Coaching Experience

A typical session with Bergquist lasts 90 minutes and combines psychological insight with physical training.

  • First 30 Minutes – Question & Answer Work: Clients engage in a dialogue designed to uncover underlying mental and emotional patterns.

  • Next 60 Minutes – Personalized Fitness: Workouts focus on three main areas: fat loss, muscle gain, and strength. Sessions are tailored based on a physical assessment, which includes movement patterns, spinal alignment, and blood pressure.

“I call it ‘fast that lasts,’” Bergquist said. “My work is for people who have tried fitness before but haven’t seen lasting results. It’s about sustainable, efficient transformation—body, mind, and purpose.”

Life and Fitness in Nashville

Bergquist embraces Nashville’s outdoor lifestyle, incorporating the city’s natural beauty into fitness routines. He highlights the region’s waterfalls, including Palmer Falls and Jackson Falls, as well as trails at Cheekwood. Local farmers markets, such as the Bellevue Farmers Market, provide fresh, intentional nutrition options.

“The city offers an incredible mix of nature, wellness culture, and community resources. It’s perfect for integrating a holistic fitness lifestyle,” he said.

Bergquist emphasizes continuous learning and sharing knowledge as key to personal growth. “I wasn’t the best at fitness initially. My catalyst was curiosity and the desire to teach. When you teach, you master the subject,” he said. His approach draws from multiple fitness disciplines, including barbell and dumbbell programming, kettlebells, and holistic modalities, combined with insights from human potential psychology. He speaks more about his life, journey and personal training format on a recent podcast.
