Exercise as Rehabilitation: What Correctional Fitness Programs Teach Us About Mental Health

Each human on the planet has certain rights. Human rights are also applied to individuals behind bars. They need to have access to certain humane living conditions. One thing where the focus is largely missed is their mental health.

Many factors would affect mental health, but if somebody goes through exercise sessions, it helps them to drain out energy and feel relaxed. This article draws on the importance of fitness programs for people inside correctional facilities.

Should Prisoners Be Allowed Such Facilities?

You might not generally get along well with people labeled as criminals, but there are levels of crime, and not everyone is serving a life sentence. Some are there for a few days, some for months, and others might be for years. Eventually, they have to go back to society and live with common people.

So what if they are not rehabilitated in a proper way and carry all that frustration back to the outside world? So it is really important that correctional facilities have certain ways to manage these people so they go out as better individuals.

How Exercise Helps

Imagine a situation where you are locked up in a washroom-sized room, just able to sit, stand, and lie down in a specific closed area. Your body would get frustrated in no time, and this cannot be prolonged.

On the other side, although you have to stay in your cell for a considerable time period, you still have the opportunity to go out and give your body some activity. The built-up energy finds a way out and the mind gets a break from staring at the same walls.

Also a person who exercises regularly should have better sleep and would also stay calm through the day. The frustration is all poured out and this does a lot good to mental health.

Is Fitness Equipment Safe to Have in Prisons?

As we watch in movies, there is a feeling that prisons should have minimal tools and equipment. As inmates try to overpower each other in certain situations, the presence of potentially harmful tools can cause great harm.

However, specialized prison exercise equipment can be installed where it can’t be misused. You would see these equipment installed properly to the grounds and human power cannot dismantle them. There is nothing to pick up and move around. It is made sure that there are no loose plates or cables and nothing is removable.

Wielded steel is used to manufacture these equipment so they withstand outdoor weather for years to come. So they are easy to maintain and nothing much needs to be done about them once installed.

What Lessons We Need To See

We talked about the mental health of those who are not part of mainstream society, but mental health statistics for the masses are also not nice. We need to go outdoors as well and make fitness our top priority. Once you give your body that push it needs, it helps you improve physically and reduce stress levels.

Many other benefits are also attached to doing exercise regularly, but one thing to note is that we are living with all support mechanisms intact. We have proper nutrition access, fitness apps to cover our workouts, and fitness gear, so leave behind the excuses and challenge yourself.

Endnote

Workouts are not a complete solution to mental health issues. but if you are able to gather your focus and start pushing yourself, there are numerous benefits attached to this. You can cope better with stressful situations, and improvement in physical strength is a great confidence booster.
