Broadway to Backwoods: Kay Maples Launches Hiking Club in Nashville

(NASHVILLE, Tenn.,) — Kay Maples, known in the community for her work in wedding planning and event management, is taking her love for the outdoors to new heights with the launch of a hiking club designed to bring people together for exploration, connection, and wellness.

After years of leading hikes as a naturalist and a decade of personal hiking experience, Maples recognized a growing need for organized, inclusive outdoor adventures. “Lately I’ve been doing a lot of solo hikes, and I just haven’t been able to find people to go with me,” she said. “Then everyone would ask me, ‘How was that trail?’ That’s when I realized I should start a group and help people experience these amazing places safely and with community.”

Backroads to Broadway aims to connect hikers of all experience levels while emphasizing safety, community, and education. Participants will explore both easy local trails and more adventurous destinations, such as Burgess Falls and Cummins Falls, with hopes to expand into waterfall hikes and seasonal excursions in the coming months.

The first official hike is scheduled for Saturday, November 8, at Radnor Lake, where participants will enjoy the lake trail loop, a relaxed route perfect for morning coffee and new connections. Future hikes will be scheduled monthly, with hopes to incorporate community service projects and special events.

For Maples, hiking is not just a physical activity, it’s a mental reset. “It brings me peace of mind and calm because my life is so busy and chaotic. Being outside, away from phones and social media, allows me to just be in the moment,” she said. Beyond personal wellness, she enjoys sharing knowledge and experiences with others, helping them discover trails and natural beauty they may not have explored on their own.

Maples is also mindful of practical safety tips for new hikers. Essentials she recommends include a backpack, water (and a backup), a first aid kit, mace, and a towel. She emphasizes that her hikes are designed to be accessible to beginners while still offering challenge and adventure for more experienced participants.

For updates, trail information, and to join upcoming hikes, follow them on Instagram. Maples plans to launch a Facebook page and website soon.

Maples said, quoting Ratatouille: “Anyone can cook, anyone can hike.” Her message is clear: the outdoors is for everyone, and the club is about more than just exercise, it’s about building community, exploring nature, and creating memories together.
