Nashville’s First Recycled Outdoor-Clothing Shop Opening In East Nashville

Oct 1, 2019 | East Nashville, TN – On Saturday, October 5 from noon to 6:00 p.m., Orbital Outdoors will host the grand opening of its brick and mortar store at the Shoppes on Fatherland in Five Points. The store will feature upcycled outdoor-centric clothing and gear, ranging from National Parks memorabilia to vintage Patagonia, the North Face and other outdoor brands. The owners, Mark and Kelsey, want to inspire Nashvillians to get outside, and look good doing it.

Kelsey Silverstein and Mark Donoher live in East Nashville with their three dogs Maddie, Ollie and Rocky. Their journey together began when they met in Savannah, Georgia six years ago. Mark and Kelsey took a year-long road trip to climb and mountain bike their way across the U.S.

Their cross-country trek started in a Subaru with a homemade trailer attached, and they eventually upgraded to a van. To sustain their trip financially, they scoured the nation’s thrift stores along the way and sold the best pieces of clothing they found on Ebay. Mark and Kelsey eventually ended up in Nashville and got married. Mark also founded and runs Orbital Climbing, LLC, a company that specializes in homemade skincare remedies for climbers, aptly named Boulder Balm. They are passionate about environmental conservation and are motivated to inspire others to take steps to mitigate their environmental impact. Boulder Balm is handmade with sustainable materials by Mark, and Kelsey procures all items sold at Orbital Outdoors.

The store mural was created by Clare Horne of AMARANT ART & DESIGN.

Innovative 5K Supporting Veterans Returns to Nashville

Aug 19, 2019 | NASHVILLE, TN – A inspiring 5K supporting injured veterans is right around the corner in Nashville. The Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP) Carry Forward® 5K, delivered by CSX®, returns to Music City on Sept. 21 outside Nissan Stadium.

The event is building on an incredible first year when more than 800 participants coursed streets and crossed the Cumberland River, all to support the mission of honoring and empowering wounded veterans and their families.

“With all of the hundreds of people that are here supporting us, it really warms my heart to know this is the country we live in,” said one veteran after last year’s Nashville event.

WWP is putting that mission in motion again this year by encouraging participants to take action in one of three ways:

  • Carry a flag to show support and patriotism.
  • Carry a weight to represent the responsibilities veterans carry while serving our country.
  • Carry another person to symbolize one warrior carrying another in their time of need.

To sign up for the event, visit the Carry Forward website. 100% of the registration cost goes toward supporting wounded veterans and their families. Warriors never pay a penny for any WWP program or service; they paid their dues on the battlefield.

Can’t make it to the Nashville event? Carry Forward events will also be held in San Antonio (Oct. 5) and Jacksonville, Florida (Nov. 9).

You can also host your own virtual Carry Forward event; more than 300 people have already participated virtually this year. For more information on how to create your own 5K, check out the virtual Carry Forward page and register your squad today.

Sober Bar National Tour Planned for Nashville

Sans Bar Contact:
Chris Marshall

July 22, 2019 | NASHVILLE, TN – Austin based Sans Bar has plans to expand beyond Texas in 2019.

On January 16th 2019, in Seattle, Washington Founder/CEO Chris Marshall announced plans to bring a sober bar experience to 9 cities, popping up for one night only with the hope of spreading his vision of alcohol free fun from Anchorage, Alaska to NYC and all points in between. On New Years Eve of 2018, Marshall launched Sans Bar Kansas City with local businesswoman Melissa Saubers. This is the first franchise of a sober bar in the United States, and Marshall hopes this tour will help inspire others to create safe, inclusive sober establishments for Americans. “There is a growing movement of people across the country who are experimenting with periods of abstinence from alcohol. Given that, and the rising number of Americans who identify as “actively in recovery” from drug and alcohol dependence, we felt it was time to take our sober bar concept on the road,” said Marshall.

Founded in 2017, Sans Bar’s mission is to provide “the bar experience without the booze”. Open every Friday, the Austin location serves up hand crafted mocktails to individuals aged 16 and over. Guests are treated to live music, karaoke, and dancing all in a welcoming space in east Austin. Prior to founding Sans Bar, Marshall was a drug and alcohol counselor in the Austin area for 8 years. “I saw so many of my friends and clients struggle to stay sober. While they desperately wanted to live without drugs and alcohol, there wasn’t a place where they could get dressed up, and meet other sober people. No one should die because of stigma or isolation,” said Marshall.

On August 3rd the Sans Bar National Tour rolls into Tennessee. Sans Bar Nashville, to be held at the Nashville Recovery Center will be a historic evening filled with live music from local artists, and Pittsburgh based duo Dinosoul. Marshall and co-host Tyler Neumann have partnered with Nashville’s own chef Holly Darnell to create a health conscious drink and food menu that will be a welcome refresher to the early August heat. This event will also be a gathering space for the female centered recovery group SheRecovers.

Sponsored by DRY Soda Company, Portland Soda Company and Topo Chico USA, Sans Bar aims to coalesce each community around sober fun. “We are not anti-drinking, what we are saying is that everyone deserves an alternative to night life that is centered around alcohol,” Marshall said.

Future tour stops include:
Nashville 8/3
Los Angeles 9/28

Downtown Nashville Set to Host 41st Running of Music City Triathlon

June 10, 2019 | NASHVILLE, TN – This year marks the 41st running of the Music City Triathlon in Nashville. Although it has been hosted at different venues across Nashville, the race is one of the oldest consecutively run triathlons in the country.

Since 2011, the triathlon has been held downtown along the banks of the Cumberland River, where participants are able to swim in the river, transition in the parking lot adjacent to the stadium, ride on a closed, traffic-free Ellington Parkway and run a flat out-and-back course with spectacular views of downtown Nashville.

Executed and produced by Team Magic Multisports, the 2019 Eddie Ferrell Music City Triathlon features an Olympic distance race, which is a 1.5k swim, a 44k bike and a 10k run as well as a Sprint distance, which is a 300m swim, 22k bike and a 5k run.

In addition to the different distances, the race also offers multiple categories, including Aquabike (swim and bike only), Cyclorun (bike and run only), Paratriathlete, Physically Challenged, Beginner (participated in fewer than 3 triathlons), Clydesdale (220-plus pound men), Athena (165-plus pound women) and three- and two-person relay teams which can be male, female, coed, family or corporate.

“With all of the different options this race offers, there’s no reason anyone can’t sign up and try this race,” said race director Faye Yates. “We see people every year who have never done a triathlon before and they tell us after it’s over that they can’t wait to sign up for another one. We don’t ever want anybody to think they can’t do it, because they can.”

Robbie Rainbow, a recent contestant on the hit ABC show “Castaways” began his amazing 170-pound weight loss journey at the Eddie Ferrell Music City Triathlon after being motivated by cheering on his daughter.

“I wanted it to become a family affair, my daughter had signed up and as I sat and watched her cross the finish line, I felt it was something that was possible for me,” he said. “The fear of the swim, the joy of the bike and the struggle of the run.  I wanted the challenge for myself, I wanted to cross the finish line.  So, I signed up, challenged myself and finished my race!  I hope there will be many more to come!”

Awards will be given to the top three finishers in eight categories and the first overall finishers in another 15 categories. All participants who finish the race receive a logoed finisher medal at the finish line.

This year’s event is also the USA Triathlon 2019 Tennessee State Championship for both age group and high school athletes. The top 25 percent of age-group athletes competing in the Olympic distance will qualify through the Tennessee State Championship for USAT Age Group Nationals in Cleveland, Ohio, on Aug. 10-11.

USAT state championship awards will be distributed to the top three overall adults in the Olympic distance and top three overall high school division for the sprint. High Schoolers are identified as anyone entering their freshman year in fall 2019 to anyone that graduated in spring 2019.

At each Team Magic event, a charity partner is chosen, which is a campaign that speaks to the passion of our participants and volunteers. This event has partnered with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and all funds raised through the race will go directly to this amazing organization to ensure that families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food.
