NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Sometimes, all it takes is one decision to change the course of your life.

For Elexus Holmes, that decision came after graduating from Purdue University in 2020 with a degree in Hospitality Management. Originally from Indiana, Holmes moved to Middle Tennessee six years ago with plans to build a career in the restaurant industry. But after experiencing the demanding pace of the business firsthand, she realized it wasn’t where she was meant to be.
“The long, grueling hours just weren’t for me,” Holmes said. “In 2021, I read a book that changed everything. It sparked a fire in me to become an entrepreneur and switch paths, leading me to become a full-time personal trainer and corrective exercise specialist.”
Today, Holmes has spent more than four years training clients one-on-one and has dedicated more than nine years to her own fitness journey. She now helps others build strength, confidence and healthier lifestyles throughout Middle Tennessee.
Her path wasn’t always easy. Like many new trainers entering the industry, Holmes struggled to find someone willing to give her a chance.
“Trying to find a job as a trainer was fairly discouraging. I applied to so many places with no luck,” Holmes said. “I had to pivot and figure out what I could do solo. So, I trained friends, did pop-up workouts at Shelby Park, and learned to do what I could with what I had.”

That determination eventually led her to opportunities that helped shape her career, including an influential mentorship.
“Finding a job as a beginner personal trainer was incredibly difficult,” Holmes said. “I’d like to thank Jeff Howerton at LEAN for taking me on as a mentee and giving me the opportunity to begin training there under his guidance. Without him I wouldn’t have the knowledge or confidence I do today.”
Today, she trains clients at Next Level Fitness and the recently opened hotspot The Girl Cave.
Outside the gym, Holmes finds balance by spending time outdoors and embracing hobbies that keep her grounded.
“Nashville has amazing parks and hikes in the area,” she said. “If I’m not at the gym, and it’s not miserably hot outside, I like to spend time in nature talking to trees, long boarding, or walking. I also love journaling, sewing, hangs with friends, reading, and cooking to help clear my mind.”
She also encourages others to support local businesses, giving a special shoutout to QNTM, one of her favorite Nashville gyms where she has trained for more than four years.
When asked what advice she would give someone struggling to stay committed to their health and fitness goals, Holmes kept it real.
“Decide whether or not you really want to reach your goals,” she said. “Act accordingly.”
Those interested in training with Holmes can connect with her on Instagram. She offers one-on-one personal training Tuesday through Friday at Next Level Fitness and also teaches small group classes at The Girl Cave.
