What’s In Your Bag? – Dustin Del Rio

Q&A WITH DUSTIN DEL RIO (GYM CREATOR / ACROBATICS INSTRUCTOR / CALISTHENICS AND STRENGTH COACH) AT CORE FITNESS NASHVILLE

We mean your gym bag. For some, it’s a top of the line, multi-functional fashion statement. For others it’s a simple backpack. No matter how fancy their features are, what really matters is what lies within. This month we asked Dustin to show off what his bag holds within.

WHAT ITEMS DO YOU ALWAYS CARRY IN YOUR GYM BAG?

My office is the gym, so my bag has to have everything I need to complete the day. I keep it simple, but it’s full of coffee to keep me alert, fruit, some Kind bars and juice for fuel. I also keep my laptop on me to track client progress.

TELL US YOUR GO-TO PRE-WORKOUT AND POST-WORKOUT SNACK/DRINK?

Pre-workout is coffee or a juice from the Juice Bar. Love that place. Post-workout is usually a meal to refuel. I try to eat a full meal mixed of protein, vegetables, and clean carbs.

WHAT’S THE NEWEST PIECE OF GEAR/APPAREL YOU’VE PURCHASED?

I recently purchased ankle weights from Amazon to help with my calisthenics and handstand training. I do a lot of acro so I’m constantly looking to improve my form and strength. It’s an incredible way to really challenge your body!

WHAT’S CHANGED ABOUT YOUR GYM BAG OVER THE PAST YEAR?

I used to do a typical pre-workout drink, but ever since I’ve started going for more less processed options in my life, it’s allowed me to throw all of that stuff out. Plus I drink plenty of coffee anyway, so sometimes an extra pre-workout would put me over my caffeine limit for the day ha. Keurig Hazelnut is my go-to though.

IF YOUR BAG SOMEHOW CAUGHT FIRE AND YOU COULD ONLY SAVE ONE ITEM, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

All my stuff is food thank God, so I wouldn’t be too worried if it suddenly caught flame. I would be super bummed if I couldn’t have my coffee though. Coffee is my humming bird.

ON A GOOD DAY, YOUR OPTIMAL WORKOUT ROUTINE LOOKS LIKE…

Plenty of time to train, I’m not rushed, nothing to do till much later in the day and I can really get after it.

I usually start with a warm-up and then some handstand training. Then I begin a two day split of exercises: Day 1 – Front squats, overhead presses, weighted pull-ups. Day 2 – Bench press, weighted dips, levers front and back. I love this stuff.

FAVORITE QUOTE/MANTRA YOU LIVE BY?

Take Risks, Drive Fast. Live Dangerously!

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE COLOR?

I like certain shades of green. It’s always been a favorite of mine.

HOW OLD ARE YOU? AND HOW OLD DO YOU FEEL?

I’m 31. How I feel typically depends on the day though. I have days where I feel amazing, like I’m 18 again and ready to roll.

But I definitely know I’m not 18 anymore ha. My body adapts to training differently, I really focus on getting my muscles warmed up and ready for activity, otherwise I get small muscle strains that take a little longer to heal than I would like.

Honestly, right now I feel great! Stronger, in better shape and a better understanding of what that means than ever.

WHO DO YOU ADMIRE OR LOOK UP TO AS A ROLE MODEL?

I have many role models, basically anyone dominating their field of work, anyone who has passion about what they do and does it well is so motivating to me.

I want to bring something unique and amazing to the world through my pathways to do so, currently it’s Partner Acrobatics, Calisthenics, and Strength Coaching. Anyone who is successful and does something well will get my attention quick.

THE BEST WORKOUT PLAYLIST WOULD FEATURE THE FOLLOWING SONGS…

Currently I’m obsessed with PANDA, by Desiigner. Fell in the Sun by B Grams and Save Dat Money by lil Dicky.

My throwback that always gets me ready is Rage Against the Machine.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ANYTHING ABOUT YOUR WORKOUT BAG, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Not a thing, Life is good!
